In this seminar, Dr Crowe will draw on a range of examples to give an overview of her research on using Operational Research (OR) to inform the organisation and delivery of health care services. As a Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellow, Sonya has been exploring how OR can contribute more effectively to improvements in practice, with a particular focus on the combined use of ‘hard’ (quantitative) and ‘soft’ (qualitative) OR methods to tackle problems in care pathways that span multiple settings. Application areas include: services provided in the community for babies following cardiac surgery; community services delivered in the home for the over 65s and; overcrowding in the emergency department of an acute hospital. Sonya will also describe recent research and initiatives that aim to harness OR more effectively towards improving health care and will invite the audience’s reflections and ideas about this.

Dr Sonya Crowe, UCL Clinical Operational Research Unit. Sonya is a Lecturer in Operational Research at UCL’s Clinical Operational Research Unit (CORU) and a Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellow. Her research in health care Operational Research (OR) has spanned a wide range of contexts relating to service delivery and innovation in health and social care, health protection policy and global health. She is currently the Improvement Scientist in Residence at Care City, an innovation and research hub in north east London, and leads a multi-disciplinary embedded research team at University College London Hospitals. Sonya’s background is in physics and she worked in the Government OR Services before joining CORU in 2009 from the Department of Health. Her current interests include combining ‘hard’ (quantitative) and ‘soft’ (qualitative) OR methods to improve services that span multiple sectors, and enhancing the effectiveness of OR in contributing to improvement.
