Event details
Penrose tilings are aperiodic tilings that do not fit into the classical theory of crystallography. In this talk we’ll prove that the Kite and Dart tiles can be used to tile the Euclidean plane, that the tiling cannot have any translational symmetry. The tiling can have a point of 5 fold symmetry but only one such point. The tiling has many wonderful properties involving the golden ration, Fibonaci numbers, projections from higher dimensional spaces. Moreover, the tiling makes an attractive poster or something you can stick on the stair risers to a maths building. By the end of this talk you will have all the information and resources you need to plan your own Penrose tiling artworks.
