Abstract: Coarse median spaces/groups were introduced by Bowditch as a unified way to study Gromov hyperbolic groups, CAT(0) cube groups, and mapping class groups. These groups share several nice properties including quadratic Dehn's function, rapid decay, and Yu's Property A. Joint with Graham Niblo and Nick Wright, recently we get several new perspectives on coarse median spaces, as well as new characterisations for their rank, which illuminate how to regard coarse median as high-rank analogues of hyperbolicity. Some of these results are obtained by analysing geometry of the associated interval structures, which simultaneously offer us intrinsic metrics. In my talk, I will introduce these objects and properties, as well as our recent work mentioned above.
