Abstract: We will discuss how with a little bit of algebra one can recover the theorem of Thurston on the structure of fibrings of 3-manifolds without doing any topology. We will then see how the same approach yields analogous results for related groups (including free-by-cyclic groups and some Poincaré duality groups in dimension 3).
