Abstract: Modular tensor categories arise in Conformal Field Theory through models in subfactor theory in operator algebras and twisted equivariant K-theory. I will discuss some of the tools and results to understand conformal field theories and their modular invariant partition functions, modular tensor categories and module categories and in particular the issue of constructing models with specific modular data and modular tensor categories.
