Event details

Tools for determining nurse staffing requirements on hospital wards typically match staffing levels to the average (mean) workload associated with a particular patient group, factor or aspect of care. However the variability and skewness of workload distributions, and thus the suitability of using the mean, has rarely been reported. We simulate alternative ways of using the Safer Nursing Care Tool to set the number of staff to employ: an “average”, “low” and “high” staffing policy. We assess the cost-effectiveness of each alternative by accounting for the costs of both permanent and temporary staff.
