Hampshire Maths Challenge 2012

The Hampshire Maths Challenge 2013 is now here.  Once again, we are pleased to invite students to participate in the Maths Challenge and the Senior Maths Challenge.  The Maths Challenges are brought to you by Southampton University's Mathematics Outreach Team.

Schools from Hampshire and further afield took part in the competition, including Victoria College Jersey, South Dartmoor Community College, and also King Edward VI, Upper Shirley High and Chamberlayne College for the Arts in Southampton.

A prize award evening for the winning students and their parents took place on Wednesday 16th May, where the highest placed students were treated to Maths games and masterclasses, as well as prizes and certificates awarded by Prof Adam Wheeler, a Mathematician and Provost at the University of Southampton.

The Hampshire Mathematics Challenge was aimed at Year 10 students and below and had an Olympic theme. Entry was free and the competition was launched in February.

The Challenge and Senior Challenge competitions are set by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Liverpool through the Mathematics on Merseyside (MEM) outreach initiative. The MEM Challenge and Senior Challenge competitions date back to 1978, and have been run at Southampton since 2011.

The Hampshire Maths Challenge was a collaboration between the University of Southampton Mathematics Outreach team and the Recruitment, Outreach and Admissions team.

Professor Tim Sluckin who ran the challenge commented:

We want to get the idea across to youngsters that not only are maths skills essential, but also that doing maths can be fun. It was extremely encouraging to see the high level of mathematics reached by so many pupils.

Printing the challenge

The page order of the Challenges may look a bit odd - the last page appears first.  This is so you can print these as a booklet.  From Adobe Reader, select Print.  Then change the Page Scaling to "Multiple pages per sheet" and set the Pages per sheet option to 2.
