Dr Alan Kimber , Professor Wei Liu and Professor Phil PrescottMajor research topics in biostatistics are survival analysis and modelling repeated measures. The methodological focus is on extensions of parametric models, models with random effects, longitudinal modelling and multiple comparison tests.

Applied work in medical statistics includes the design and analysis of clinical trials and the production of systematic reviews in nutrition, obesity and Parkinson's disease. Additional application areas in conventional medicine include organ transplantation, chronic diseases, fibrosing colonopathy in cystic fibrosis patients, schizophrenia and suicide, skin prick tests and conjunctival provocation tests for allergies. Research into complementary therapies includes the use of acupuncture to treat neck pain, back pain, and stroke, and into the use of therapies involving natural remedies.

The medical statistics group in the School of Mathematics includes Alan Kimber, Wei Liu and Phil Prescott. There is also wide-ranging interest in this topic in many areas of S3RI, in particular the statisticians in the School of Medicine.
