Hi, I'm Benjamin Steed and I am studying MMATH Mathematics.

The high quality academic facilities and huge array of extracurricular opportunities really drew me to the University of Southampton.

Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

The high quality academic facilities and huge array of extracurricular opportunities really drew me to the University of Southampton.

What are you enjoying most about your course?

The level of choice I have in the direction my degree takes – I can endeavour into any branch of mathematics.
I've learned a lot from each of my modules throughout university but the one that sparked my excitement for Mathematics was Number Theory with its explanation of methods for solving problems dating from over two thousand years ago that we still use today! While studying Number Theory I feel connected to the rich history of Mathematics and the philosophers who first endeavoured to explore it.

What is it like studying here?

There’s a really well-established student community – it gives you an excellent sense of identity.

What has it been like to study online at the University?

It was a culture shock at first, but now its great! The high quality of education has been maintained through excellent video recorded lectures and detailed notes.

How do you rate the study facilities at the University?

There is a seemingly endless choice of places to study on campus. Every week you’ll find a new favourite spot.

Did you or do you stay in University accommodation? What has your experience been like?

I stayed in Mayflower halls in my first year. They were amazing. Incredibly clean and professionally run. I met some great friends there.

What is the city of Southampton like to live in?

Southampton city is great. Being right on the water, you have access to things like cruise ships, sailing courses and even a Port and Maritime reserve centre!

Have you undertaken any work placements, collaborations with industry, internships, studying abroad or volunteering? How have these enhanced your experience?

Working in the first year workshops has really enhanced my third year. Not only does it give me a chance to interact with new students, but it helps cement my knowledge too.

What are you most proud of from your time at Southampton so far?

I’m most proud of meeting some incredible people from all over the world whom I’d never have met if it weren’t for the University of Southampton.

What do you think you have gained from your studies that you wouldn’t have developed without them?

I’ve gained confidence in myself both socially and academically through studying here.

How have the people you have met at Southampton changed your life?

I’ve met such great people. Seeing how other people live and work has changed how I live for the better.

Have you undertaken any extracurricular activities? How have they enhanced your experience?

Playing Ice Hockey at the University of Southampton has given me the opportunity to meet so many people and travel all over the UK.

What will you do with your degree/research after you have finished your studies?

Once I’ve completed my degree, I’m going to train as an officer in the British Army.

A degree in Mathematics conditions the mind to critically analyse numbers wherever they're found - a skill that has been invaluable to me in daily life.
