Erasmus students coming to Southampton

Why come to Southampton? You'll find that we are a friendly place where staff and students know each other quite well, and where it is easy to make friends. At the same time we have a good range of undergraduate course units to choose from. We have well-known MPhil courses in Statistics and in Operations Research, and we are one of the top research universities. There are always students from abroad around, both Socrates visitors and PhD students.

Southampton is a medium-sized city. The centre is largely modern (because of bombing in WW2) but with some interesting historic buildings and museums, and very green. Southampton is known for being a cruise liner port, a centre of ocean racing, and its history of aircraft building. It is of course on the coast, and the nearby Isle of Wight and the New Forest are nice areas of the countryside. London is 75 minutes by train. There are many other interesting cities nearby, such as Winchester, Salisbury and Bath. The city has frequent classical music, musicals and opera, several cinemas, and three public art galleries.

The university campus is mainly 1960s and very pleasant. It is next to the Common (that is, a large park), about 3 kms from the city centre. On campus we have a well-known concert hall, a theatre, an art gallery, and a cinema club. There are many sports and other student clubs.
