Dr Ben Marshall is Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine within Medicine at the University of Southampton.

Ben is currently a senior Consultant Physician in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He was appointed in 2000 and has led the respiratory service twice in this time.

He joined the Faculty of Medicine in 2006 as a 0.3 WTE academic, on the BM4 programme. His responsibilities here involve teaching, developing teaching materials for the graduate group tutorials, staff recruitment and development. He also teaches on the BM5 and BM6 programmes, and is a tutor for third and fifth year students on his respiratory firm at the hospital.

His research interests have focussed on furthering an understanding of the immune responses involved in protective immunity and predisposition to mycobacterial infections as well as in the range of interstitial lung diseases that lead to lung fibrosis.

He enjoys service innovation both in the teaching curriculum and on the clinical side.

Research interests

Ben’s roles in research currently extend to supervision of third year student projects and collaborations within the Division of Clinical Experimental Sciences.

Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education

I am an educator both of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees.
I have pastoral responsibilities within these roles.

I am a facilitator on the Doctors as Educators Programme within the Medical Education Unit at the Royal College of Physicians in London

I have been a board member of the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Group

Ben is a passionate teacher of students but also of teachers. He is fully supportive of ongoing staff development of the facilitators he is responsible for on this programme.

Ben is very engaged with lecturing on the BM4 and BM5 programmes, and enjoys teaching practical skills such as ECG and Chest Drain insertion
