Course in Pain Management - Non-Medical Prescribing Continuing Professional Development

Published: 27 April 2011

After an approach from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Sally Curtis designed and co-delivered a new Non-Medical Prescribing Continuing Professional Development Course in Pain Management on the 27th April.

The day was mainly attended by nurses, many of whom were pain specialists. It began with an innovative integrated session on the biopsychosocial aspects of pain. This session covers many of the different factors involved in the pain experience. Sally was joined by Dr Kathy Kendall in delivering this interactive session. The day also included pain assessment and the pharmacology of analgesia. After lunch Dr Cathy Price held a pain management workshop which looked at the problems associated with treating pain patients, both in the short and long term. This was followed by a presentation from two pain patients, describing the patient experience. The day was wrapped up by working through a pain case using the information taught during the day to look at how different stages of patient care relate to the different aspects of pain management.
