Kathy Kendall awarded grant for workshop on Madness, Addiction and Crime in Canada

Published: 9 July 2012

Kathy Kendall is principal investigator on a successful seed grant application to the Centre for the Study of Gender, Social Inequities and Mental Health in Vancouver.

The Centre is based at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and Kathy and her team members received $15,000 (Canadian) to run a one-day workshop titled 'Reel Lives: Madness, Addiction and Crime in Canada' to be held in Vancouver on 11 May, 2013.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together academics, film-makers and individuals with experiences of mental health issues and/or addiction and/or criminalization in order to foster critical dialogue about Canadian documentary films representing madness, addiction and crime.

Their intention is to gain new knowledge in this under-explored area, to move critical analyses toward a gender and social inequities lens and to explore the use of documentary film as a tool for community engagement and social change.
