Current and former members of Medical Education said their farewells to Professor Chris Stephens over strawberries and cream last week.

Chris began working for the University over 20 years ago and led and developed the Faculty’s medical education programmes since being appointed the first Director of Medical Education in 2000. Under Chris’s leadership, medical student numbers expanded significantly, and the number of undergraduate programmes grew from a single, five-year programme, to include a four-year graduate entry programme, a six-year widening access programme, and – most recently – a five year bilingual European programme run in partnership with a healthcare provider in Germany.

Chris’s influence and reputation extends far beyond Southampton, both in the UK and internationally, having worked over many years to develop medical curricula with colleagues as far apart as Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan as well as across Europe and the USA.

However, it is in Southampton that Chris will be most immediately missed, not only for his strong leadership, but also for the friendship and support that he gave to so many during his time in Medical Education.
