Clinical Supervisor training for the new Year 4

Published: 25 February 2016

A new staff development course for clinical supervisors was piloted for the first time on 22nd January 2016. Run by Helen Lotery (Year 4 Lead), David Owen (Lead for Personal Professional Development), and Jacquie Kelly (Faculty Development), the half-day course is designed for supervisors who will be providing placements for students next year in the new clinical modules, as Year 4 of the new curriculum rolls out.

The aims of the course are to develop skills as a Clinical Supervisor, and contribute to the guidance for students and development of clinical placements in different settings. We explored roles and responsibilities, expectations of supervisors, assessment of students, and resources for meeting GMC requirements for placements. We also identified challenging situations that might arise and how to approach them. Participants with a range of responsibilities within the curriculum came from different NHS Trusts to which students will be attached, which greatly enriched the discussions which will contribute to the development of the role.

Student input was provided by Danielle Hart (Year 2) and Ash James (Year 4), who offered very helpful insights into the student perspective. We are very grateful to them for giving up their time.

We greatly appreciated the input of everyone in the group and the discussion and feedback are helping to shape our next faculty development event for the new year 4. This will take place on Friday morning on 27th May at Chilworth Manor Hotel. For more information email meded@southampton.ac.uk.
