The University of Southampton
Medical Education

Congratulations to Professor Shelley Parr

Published: 5 September 2016

Following the recent promotion round, Shelley Parr has been appointed Professorial Fellow in Medical Education.

Shelley said, “I am thrilled to have been awarded this and think the University of Southampton should be very proud to have developed and implemented promotion criteria that genuinely reward staff on the education pathway for leadership responsibilities as well as scholarly activities.”

In the seventeen years since she completed her PhD in Medical Physiology, Shelley has actively pursued a career in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in preference to a career in research, despite having successfully published in a high impact journal (BMJ) during her one and only research post. She has since been a strong supporter of the education focused career route in Higher Education, championing it as a career choice for those with skills and talents in this area and not as a 'fall back' option as it can sometimes be viewed.

“It wasn’t the easiest of career choices to have taken but it is what I am most passionate about and I am hopeful it is becoming a more established career pathway in the UK.”
