New Anatomy Teaching Fellow

We are delighted to welcome Dr Ian Jenkins to the Medical Education team.

Ian is a Fellow of the Higher education Academy and joined the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences (CLAS) in August.

Ian’s enthusiasm for anatomy began at Bristol medical school in the late 1980s and he subsequently specialised in vertebrate comparative anatomy and biomechanics as part of a joint honours degree in geology and biology. Ian did his PhD at the University of Cambridge researching evolutionary functional anatomy, during which he took on a large teaching load outside his research. This was followed by two anatomy postdoc positons at Bristol and UCL and training in Dental Surgery at Bristol, all interspersed with significant teaching in clinical human, veterinary and comparative anatomy.

Four years at the University of Reading saw Ian successfully introduce a large swathe of vertebrate anatomy and he went on to set up the clinical anatomy and human physiology curricula for the new intakes of postgraduate Physician Associate students. His last task at Reading was to design the two year anatomy curriculum for an ambitious – though subsequently cancelled – bid to set up a medical school.

Ian’s broad anatomical interests have distilled down via his dentistry training to a focus on human clinical anatomy and he is looking forward to working with his fellow anatomists to deliver high-quality anatomical teaching to medical undergraduates and postgraduates at Southampton.
