Widening Access to Medicine Residential

The Widening Access to Medicine (BM6) Residential is an annual three-day residential course for 30 Year 12 students, designed to increase their knowledge of the role of doctors and the training they undergo.

Medical Education staff and teams from across the University and UHS provide various opportunities for participants to develop interpersonal skills, increase their awareness of the undergraduate medical experience and to support them in their applications to study Medicine.

This year’s BM6 Residential, organised by the Schools and Colleges Outreach Team, took place 8 – 10 April and included a day of activities in the Life Lab at Southampton General Hospital, with Clinical skills sessions, specialist speed dating, critical case simulation and other workshops including interview skills and UKCAT sessions. There was also a session run by a current BM6 student five years after he attended the course.

Professor Sally Curtis, BM6 Programme Leader noted, “The BM6 Residential provides a fantastic opportunity to experience many different aspects of University and life as a medical student. The participants particularly value interacting and engaging with the medical students and learning first-hand what it is like to study medicine at Southampton. It was particularly rewarding this year as we were joined by one of our 3rd Year medical students who had previously attended the course, which shows how effective it is!”
