19th Congress of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists

The 19th Congress of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists took place at the Excel in London 9-11 August.

This coming together of the anatomy societies from around the world only occurs every 4 years. This year it was hosted by The Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland in London. The three-day conference comprised plenaries from world leading anatomists and clinicians plus a number of themed symposia, including many on education. Southampton was particularly well represented with 9 current students, 3 visiting fellows and a member of staff, all presenting aspects of their research work.

CLAS representatives were invited to talk at two of the symposia, one on innovation and the other on technology enhanced learning in anatomical education. Many of the students delivered either posters or gave talks in the general sessions too.

Symposia:

Scott Border: “Inclusivity in anatomy education: working with students as partners in the development of e-Learning”

Sam Hall and Jonny Stephens: “Disruptive Innovation. The National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition - Pedagogy through partnership”

Posters:

On research into near-peer teaching in neuroanatomy plus findings from the NUNC were given by students December Payne, Kate Geoghegan, Oliver Dean, Maclyn Augustine (Anatomical Society’s summer studentship) and visiting fellow Dr Ahmad Elmansouri

Talks:

Eva Nagy, Deepika Anbu (BMedSci project), Octavia Kurn, Prarthana Venkatesh and Alistair Robson (MMedSc project)

All work was produced via a research team focussing on clinical neuroanatomy education led by Scott Border and/or were projects co-supervised by Scott Border and Stuart Morton.
