A comparison of undergraduate outcomes for students from gateway courses and standard entry medicine courses

The first multi-site study to compare the educational outcomes of medical students from widening participation backgrounds with their standard entry peers, has been completed.

A paper, by Professor Sally Curtis (Lead Author) and Daniel Smith (General Medical Council), adds to the current conversation and highly topical area of widening participation in medicine, providing substantial evidence for attainment on entry and exit from medical school for the three longest running UK gateway programmes.

The findings of this paper provide evidence of student performance and aim to stimulate wider thinking regarding curriculum development and student support in this relatively new area of medical education.
