BM(EU) medical degree success

Published: 24 February 2023

The Faculty is delighted to announce the BM(EU) medical degree has been approved as equivalent to a German medical qualification by the German regulator - the Zentralstelle fuer auslaendisches Bildungswesen.

Post-BREXIT the equivalency recognition of the BM(EU) programme was vital and the process of obtaining it is not dissimilar to the recognition of the General Medical Council.

Dr Clare Polack, Programme Leader BM(EU), said: “This has been a lengthy but important process which included an in-depth mapping and evaluation of our curriculum against a German one. We are proud and delighted by this achievement and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved as we look forward to the next decade of our collaboration with Kassel School of Medicine.”

Students on the BM(EU) are bilingual in English and German and spend two years in Southampton and their final three years in Kassel, Germany.

Students do all the Southampton assessments and are awarded a Southampton degree and a GMC qualification. They do an FY1 in Kassel.

Dr Polack added: “This programme began before Brexit when mutual recognition of qualifications in the EU was standard. Brexit has led to many challenges, but it is a testament to the commitment and hard work of the team that the programme is still going strong, adding diversity and opportunity to students and staff in the Faculty.”
