This course has provided me with a toolkit of valuable skills such as public speaking, critical appraisal and time management which are applicable for any workplace. Applying theories and frameworks to real world situations has greatly boosted my understanding of health.

Medicine is an exciting and challenging field. I wanted to combine my knowledge of diseases, gained from my undergraduate degree, with real life applications of health management and policies, so I chose to study Public Health at Southampton. It is a world-class institution with global links to other institutes and industries, and I was impressed with the quality of the research conducted here.

Applying theories and frameworks to real world situations has greatly boosted my understanding of health. During a recent interview, I was able to discuss key issues facing health services in the UK and beyond with confidence. This course has provided me with a toolkit of valuable skills such as public speaking, critical appraisal and time management which are applicable for any workplace.

Southampton has not only given me the skills to be able to go into the professional world, but also encouraged me along the way. Our personal tutors and lecturers take a personal interest in us and provide support whenever it is needed. The facilities and teaching at Southampton are excellent; the modern lecture theatres are comfortable and spacious, and the libraries offer a wide range of resources for learning.

It has been a real highlight to meet people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. We have shared our experiences, and each brought unique skills and opinions to the course which makes learning so much more engaging. We’ve also had the opportunity to learn from health management experts from Public Health England and the World Health Organisation.

Southampton has provided me with a stepping stone into the field of public health leadership; I hope to continue down this career path to become a senior manager within the NHS.
