Dr Ahmed Alhendi is a Research Fellow in Bioinformatics within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton.

Dr Alhendi a biomedical scientist with 6 years’ work experience in Bioinformatics and computational methods. His expertise lies in bioinformatics analysis, integration, and interpretation of genomic and clinical datasets, developing computational methods to answer fundamental questions in cancer and rare disease. He is proficient in planning, designing and executing data-driven experiments.

He completed his PhD in Genetics at the department of Genetics at the University of Leicester, investigating genetic and transcriptomic changes associated with alternative lengthening of telomeres in Sarcoma cell lines. Subsequently, he worked in Nicola's Royle's laboratory at the University of Leicester, analysing genomic data from soft tissue sarcoma from patients treated through the East Midland Sarcoma Service. In 2019, he commenced a post-doctoral fellowship in Bioinformatics with Prof. Deborah Mackay in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton.

Research Fellow: Analysing genomic data from 100,000 Genomes Project, identifying different kinds of genetic changes underpinning rare diseases, and developing analytical methods (2019-present)

Bioinformatics Intern: analysing whole exome sequence (WES) data from soft tissue sarcoma from patients (2018-2019)

His research focuses on:

Rare Disease: His current research focuses on analysing genomic and clinical datasets from the 100,000 Genomes Project to identify potential novel genetic causes of growth disorders.

Developing Computational Methods: He developed an R-based tool (countToFPKM) for accurate quantification of gene expression (FPKM) from RNA-Seq data. He is currently implementing machine learning algorithms in informatic tools to improving identification of genomic anomalies (regions of homozygosity) in whole-genome sequence data.
