Dr Chrissie Jones is an Associate Professor in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the University of Southampton within the Faculty of Medicine.
Infants are at higher risk of infection than any other life stage. My research focuses on interventions in pregnancy and early life to protect infants from infection.
Chrissie Jones qualified from the University of Nottingham and undertook paediatric training, subspecialising in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, in London. Her PhD from Imperial College London took her to Cape Town, South Africa to investigate the effect of maternal HIV infection on the infant’s response to vaccination. She held a Clinical Lectureship at St George’s, University of London where she developed her interest in vaccines in pregnancy in order to protect infants from infection right from birth, motivated by the susceptibility to infection she observed amongst young infants in South Africa. During her clinical training in London, she developed an interest in congenital CMV infection and one strand of her research aims to develop an educational intervention in pregnancy to reduce the risk of women acquiring infection and so preventing infants from developing congenital CMV infection.
She is an investigator for collaborative clinical trials in paediatric infectious diseases, conducting paediatric and pregnancy vaccine trials as part of the UK academic paediatric vaccine group.
Chrissie is the co-director of an international MRC-funded network, the Immunising Pregnant Women and Infants Network. She sits on the executive committee of the Global Alignment of Immunisation Safety Assessment in pregnancy (GAIA), a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded consortium, a leader in the field of safety assessment of vaccines in pregnancy.
She is the medical advisor to the charity CMV Action and the Chair of the European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID) Committee for Education, actively supporting and developing educational initiatives across Europe.
