David joined SHTAC as a Principal Research Fellow in 2020.

Experienced health economist and medical statistician specialising in indirect comparisons and network meta-analysis for health technology assessment

A health economist and medical statistician with 22 years’ experience of health technology assessment, David has held a variety of consultancy and academic roles. At SHTAC, David contributes towards the Technology Assessment Reports programme for NICE focusing on indirect treatment comparisons.  He is also Honorary Visiting Professor at the Diabetes Research Centre, University of Leicester, and freelance consultant at Diligent Agile Synthesis (DAS) Limited.

Previously, David was Global Head of Health Economics & Epidemiology at ICON plc (2015-2017). Prior roles included: European Head (2012-2014) and Senior Director (2011-2012) at ICON plc; Associate Director (2009-2011) and Principal Health Economist (2006-2009) at Oxford Outcomes Ltd, subsequently acquired by ICON plc; Senior Health Economist (2004-2006) and Health Economics Analyst (2001-2004) at Fourth Hurdle Consulting; Senior Research Fellow at SHTAC (2000-2001); Research Fellow at the Health Economics Research Unit (HERU) (1998-2000); Project Leader at the Scottish Health Purchasing information Centre (SHPIC) (1995-1998); and Research Fellow/Assistant (1993-1995) at University of Aberdeen.     

David has worked on a wide range of clinical areas including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, oncology, medical devices and diagnostics, respiratory disease, and infectious diseases. His technical expertise and research interests include network meta-analysis, indirect treatment comparisons, survival analysis, systematic review, decision-tree models, and value of information analysis.  David has worked on numerous methodological projects contributing to HTA decision making including the ISPOR Task Force on Indirect Treatment Comparisons, has co-authored over 50 academic papers, and routinely teaches courses on evidence synthesis and health economics.
