Dr Hannah Burke is a Wellcome Trust Academic Clinical Research Fellow in Respiratory Medicine, working at the University of Southampton in Professor Tom Wilkinson’s Pulmonary Immunology research group.

Dr Hannah Burke is a Clinical Research Fellow funded by the Wellcome Trust. She also holds a Specialist training post in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine. Her current research with Professor Tom Wilkinson is investigating extracellular vesicle miRNA signatures in COPD and their involvement in altered gene expression in inflammatory cells within the airway. Dr Burke was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Southampton in 2013 and investigated the role of circulating extracellular vesicle miRNA in muscle wasting in COPD. In 2017, Dr Burke commenced a PhD study involving enrolling COPD patients into a longitudinal cohort study. Using bronchoscopic samples she has identified differentially expressed extracellular vesicle miRNA in the lungs of COPD patients compared with healthy controls. Using bioinformatic approaches she is now investigating the impact of these differentially expressed miRNA on inflammatory pathways key to disease pathogenesis. In addition, Dr Burke is involved in research and development of the COPD clinical service at University Hospital Southampton and is on the British Thoracic Society’s Specialist Advisory Group for COPD.
