Dr James Ashton is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Gastroenterology + Human Genetics and Genomic Medicine. His main research interest is focused on personalised and predicting care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease using genomic.
Dr Ashton is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Gastroenterology + Human Genetics and Genomic Medicine. Prior to this he completed a PhD on the molecular causes of paediatric inflammatory bowel disease, funded by a prestigious Action Medical Research training fellowship. He has previously been an NIHR academic clinical fellow and academic foundation doctor. Dr Ashton has published extensively in the field of paediatric gastroenterology, he has been awarded grants from European Society of Paediatric Research, Guts-UK and a European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism personal fellowship. He has presented internationally on numerous occasions and currently sits on the BSPGHAN IBD working group.
Dr Ashton’s focus is on predicting patient outcomes using clinical and genomic data, with a view to personalising therapy and management for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. He has expertise in bioinformatics, big data analysis, clinical and epidemiological data processing and next generation sequencing data. He has a specific interest in monogenic forms of inflammatory bowel disease and co-runs a clinic focused on genetic causes of gastroenterological disease in children.
Dr Ashton sits within clinical, translational and basic science research structures. In addition to his main work on the genetic of IBD, Dr Ashton has contributed to a number of local, national and international projects including work on neonatal nutrition, Coeliac disease and body composition analysis. He is keen to supervise clinical and non-clinical PhD students and there is a broad remit of work possible within the wide research group.
