Research interests

Dr Gibson has experience in bioinformatics, and expertise the computational analysis of high throughput next generation sequencing data. Including exome, whole genome, epigenome, and transcriptome analyses, as well as Genome-Wide Association studies.

Her research involves bioinformatics approaches to understanding cancer, the human genome and the changes which can lead to disease. Leveraging the molecular data generated from a range of technologies to understand the development, progression, and response to treatment in cancer. 

Research areas include:

  • Characterisation of the genomic landscape in splenic marginal zone lymphoma (with Prof Jon Strefford, Prof Sarah Ennis)
  • Investigating the Chromatin Landscape of CLL upon stimulation of the B-Cell Receptor (with Prof Jon Strefford)
  • Genomic analysis of germline and somatic lesions at the FCGR locus using long read sequencing technologies (with Prof Jon Strefford, Prof Mark Cragg)
  • Investigating the functional role of Hydroxymethylation in the pathogenesis of B-cell malignancies (with Prof Jon Strefford)
  • The role of epigenetics in Oesophageal Adenocarcinoma (with Prof. Tim Underwood, Dr Zoe Walters, Dr Mat Rose-Zerilli)
  • Investigating the benefits of directRNA and single cell sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (with Dr Jade Forster, and Dr Mat Rose-Zerilli)
  • Next generation sequencing and geResearch areas include:netic association studies which aim to determine genes underlying ophthalmic traits such as Age-related Macular Degeneration, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Nystagmus. (with Prof Andrew Lotery, Mr Jay Self & Prof Sarah Ennis).

Dr Gibson is co-module lead for the MEDI6235 Advanced Genomic Informatics module and lecturer on the MEDI6237 Genomic Technologies and Basic Informatics module of the MSc in Genomic Medicine. She also supervises and marks MSc dissertation projects.

She contributes to the undergraduate BM5 programme, taking on the role of Personal Tutor and supervising 3rd year research projects and associated project marking.

Dr Gibson also contributes to teaching in BSc Biomedical Science, Biochemistry and Pharmacology, delivering lectures and workshops on Bioinformatics (BIOL3063/6074/6055).
