Miss Jacquie Kelly is Principal Teaching Fellow (Staff Development Lead) within Medicine at the University of Southampton. Jacquie leads the Medical Education team that supports faculty development for the BM programmes.

Staff development in undergraduate medical education needs to be sensitive and flexible to the contexts in which our academic and clinical teachers are teaching.

Jacquie has been Faculty Development Lead since July 2017. She joined Medical Education in January 2014 on secondment from Solent NHS Trust, and was previously responsible for providing staff development for teachers who deliver our clinical modules.

Jacquie began teaching medical students in CAMHS, as a Learning Facilitator in the Child Psychiatry medical student teaching team in Southampton in 2010. She was involved in the development of the Year 4 Psychiatry Module, which commenced in 2016, and in particular, the Family Psychiatry week. Prior to this, she delivered mental health awareness training for staff working with young people, and is co-author of the Emotional First Aid training package, developed for Solent NHS Trust

Her clinical background is in youth counselling, with an integrative humanistic approach. She has worked with young people in various contexts, including voluntary organisations, youth service, colleges and, for 14 years, adolescent psychiatry. She is accredited with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. She has also lectured on the BA and DipHE in Counselling at Eastleigh College. She has particular interests in the impact of organisational context on clinical work, and in clinical supervision and promoting its use across the helping professions.

Jacquie’s first course of study was in English Literature and she is interested in the links between reading and therapy as intellectual and emotional activities.
