Karen Nugent is a senior lecturer in surgery based at the Southampton University NHS trust. She was appointed in 1999 having trained as a senior registrar in Basingstoke, Southampton and at Hopital St. Antoine in Paris. Her clinical interests are in the field of pelvic floor conditions and anal cancer.
She has a major interest in education, having run the 3rd and final year undergraduate teaching programmes for the medical school and now as Head of School of Surgery for Wessex manages the quality of 10 surgical postgraduate programmes. She has an MEd from the Open University and a MS in surgery from the university of London.
She is a past President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, past President of the Coloproctology section of the Royal Society of Medicine and is President of the Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecology Physiotherapists. Her present roles also include Director Education for the Association of Surgeons, International representative for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and council member of the European Society of Coloproctology
Karen Nugent is a colorectal surgeon with an interest in pelvic floor disorders and anal cancer. She works as an Honorary Consultant at Southampton General Hospital where she is runs a tertiary referral service for constipation and incontinence. She is also the regional lead for anal cancer. She has recently co-authored a textbook on pelvic floor disorders for colorectal surgeons and has contributed chapters to several other textbooks in surgery. She is married with four children.
Her undergraduate training was at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital , London, where she qualified from in 1987. She was appointed Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1991 and is Secretary of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland.
