Dr. Latha Kadalayil is a Senior Research Fellow Human Genetics and Genomic Medicine and Biostatistician in Allergy and Clinical Immunology within the Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Kadalayil is a Biostatistician with 15 years of experience in working with randomised clinical trial, observational and epidemiological data. She is also actively pursuing research on the genetic and epigenetic molecular mechanisms underlying complex human diseases such as cancer and asthma/allergy. In the past she was a lab-based scientist working in the areas of biomolecular structure, molecular mechanisms of gene regulation and signal transduction pathways of Drosophila innate immunity. One of the highlights of her past research career is her contributions to the identification and characterisation of a Drosophila transcription factor of the Rel family of transcription factors which paved the way for the characterisation of its human analogue, NF-kB.

Research interests

My research focuses on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of complex diseases, specifically cancer and asthma/allergy and marrying the findings with clinical observations. This will be achieved by applying statistical (simple and complex regression analyses, survival analysis) and bioinformatics (EWAS, GWAS, meta-analysis) tools to the vast amount of genome wide-sequencing data available both locally (two Isle of Wight Birth Cohorts, WATCH) and through collaborations outside the University of Southampton.

Current Projects

Contributions to projects:

Statistical and Bioinformatic tools applied to study
Association between parental smoking and birth weight of the offspring in mouse models (longitudinal study)
Impact of grand maternal and maternal smoking during pregnancy on the offspring’s wheeze and the role of DNA methylation in mediating it
Improving asthma control at home
Tissue-specific DNA methylation patterns
Impact of DNA methylation in asthma acquisition, lung function status over time
Association between Season of birth/season of conception and differential DNA methylation
