Marc Bullock was appointed NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Southampton in 2015.

Marc Bullock attended Hagley High School in the West Midlands and the International People’s College in Denmark before studying Medicine at Oxford University. As a Domus scholar at Pembroke College, he received the Sir Roger Bannister and Blackett Memorial Prizes, and in 2000 he rowed for the winning University Nephthys crew.

At Southampton, Mr Bullock has combined training in general surgery with ‘bench-to-bedside’ cancer research and he has published widely on the clinical applications of novel microRNA molecules in colorectal cancer progression. For this work, he was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship, an MRC Clinical Research Fellowship, and numerous conference prizes.

On completion of his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Mirnezami and Prof. Packham in Southampton, Mr Bullock was awarded the RCS-Fulbright Fellowship and spent 6 months working in the experimental therapeutics laboratory at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston Texas.

Mr Bullock is passionate about humanitarian surgery having worked for MSF in DR-Congo as well as establishing an essential surgical skills course for the resource poor setting in collaboration with the charity Mercy Ships and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 2009 the proceedings of the first British expedition to the Siberian Altai, in which Marc Bullock took part as expedition medic, were presented at the Royal Geographical Society in London.

Research interests

Marc Bullock’s primary focus is to translate novel laboratory findings into clinical applications to improve and extend the lives of patients with colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer related death in the UK, and is associated with considerable morbidity, particularly in the context of metastatic disease.

Within the Surgical Oncology Group headed by Professor Alex Mirnezami, Mr Bullock has developed a distinct program of research which amalgamates several highly topical themes, including the role of stroma derived long non-coding RNAs during colorectal cancer progression, and the diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic applications of exosomes.

PhD Superivsors: Prof Alex Mirnezami and Prof Graham Packham

Title: Identification and Characterisation of deregulated microRNAs during colorectal cancer progression – interplay between tumour stroma and malignant epithelium

Funding: MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship
