Mr Rahul Bhome BSc, MBBS, PhD, MRCS, MAcadMEd
NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Surgery

Tumour-host interaction in colorectal cancer
Mr Bhome qualified in Medicine from UCL Medical School with distinction, having received a first class intercalated BSc in pharmacology. His undergraduate research investigated inflammatory signalling in adipose tissue. Based on this early academic experience, he was appointed to an Academic Foundation post at Imperial College in 2010, followed by an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Surgery at the University of Southampton in 2012. Subsequently, in 2015, he obtained CRUK Clinical Research Fellowship to complete a PhD under the supervision of Professor Alex Mirnezami at the Southampton CRUK Centre. This was supplemented by award of an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship in 2017. Upon completion of his PhD, Mr Bhome was appointed to an NIHR Clinical Lecturer post (2019), the first part of which he spent as a Crick CRUK Clinical Postdoctoral Fellow in Erik Sahai's lab at The Francis Crick Institute.
Mr Bhome's research interests are in the field of tumour microenvironment, specifically the crosstalk between colorectal cancer cells and the stroma. He has published several articles and book chapters on cancer-associated fibroblasts, exosomes and microRNAs and has presented at numerous international meetings. His work has received additional grant funding from the British Council (Nanoscience Fellowship) and the European Union (COST Fellowship), which has allowed him to collaborate with researchers at Tel Aviv and Ghent universities.
