Dr Sean Ewings MMath, MSc, PhD
Associate Professor of Medical Statistics

Dr Sean Ewings is an Associate Professor of Medical Statistics at the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit in the University of Southampton.
Sean is a statistician within the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit. He is Scientific Lead for the gastrointestinal cancer and “other” cancer portfolios in the unit, contributing to/responsible for study design, developing grant applications, study set-up, study conduct, analysis and reporting of studies within these portfolios. He works on/has worked on phase I through to large, randomised phase III cancer studies, and on studies in a range of other health areas, including end of life care, stroke, respiratory infections and social isolation. He has experience with a range of different trial designs, including continual reassessment methods (for phase I dose-finding studies), feasibility studies, cluster randomised trials and diagnostic studies.
He sits on the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (South West) committee. He was previously Deputy Director of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), and developed and led the S3RI Statistical Methods for Diagnostic Studies course and the NIHR Research Design Service (South Central) Essential Guide to Grant Applications masterclass. He has experience of teaching research design and statistical methods to pre- and post-registration healthcare professionals.
