Dr Selma Omer completed her PhD training in Molecular Endocrinology at Reading University (2002) where she identified a novel serine protease expressed in steroidogenic tissue and studied its cellular localization and protein kinetics. Following this, Dr Omer pursued her postdoctoral research studies at Oxford University (2006) in neuroendocrinology and investigated the biological function of Annexin-1, a mediator of glucocorticoid action in the pituitary and hypothalamus and postdoctoral research studies.

She later joined the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), to pursue a career in Medical Education. Her work there connected UCSF’s Global Health Sciences and the School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education, where she participated in a collaborative partnership project between UCSF and Muhimbli University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania. The partnership centered on strategies for curricular revision and staff development towards enhance Health Professions education. In her role as education coordinator, Dr Omer worked with MUHAS colleagues to establish new Master’s programs in the Basic Sciences and organized education training programs to help MUHAS faculty develop the necessary skills to transition to a competence-based education curriculum reform. She also modelled peer-teaching strategies to improve student engagement in MUHAS’s large class sizes with limited resources.

Dr Omer joined the University Southampton in June 2012 as a senior teaching fellow in Medical Education. As a staff developer, her role focuses on provision of training for BM teachers involved in the early/pre-clinical years and leads in the development of online staff development modules on teaching learning and assessment.
