Sonia Newman is a Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement Officer (PPIE) within the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education at the University of Southampton.

Sonia began her career in Women and Children's Health in 1996 and is a registered Midwife and Health Visitor. She has many years of working with families of young children, including families of children with special educational needs. She moved into research in 2015 and has since worked in several clinical research posts.

Sonia's current role as PPIE Officer connects, facilitates, and enables researchers and students to involve the public in their research projects. She has a keen interest for helping research to make sense to people who wouldn’t normally get involved, making research accessible to all.

Sonia is co-leader of the Finding Out Together work, the focus of which is building long term sustainable relationships with different communities, with the same message, that ‘breakthroughs in health research can’t happen, unless we talk with as many people as possible’.

Sonia can be contacted at s.newman@soton.ac.uk
