Research Nurse, Patient & Public Involvement Officer

Sonia Newman is a Patient and Public Involvement Officer (PPI) and also a Research Nurse on the ATLANTIS study within the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education at the University of Southampton.
Sonia began her career in Women and Children's Health in 1996 and is a registered Midwife and Health Visitor. She has many years of working with families of young children. She moved into research in 2015, working at the NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC) as a Senior Research Assistant within the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme, specifically Women and Children's Health panel, identifying and developing research questions for the commissioned work stream. As part of this role, she took on the temporary responsibility of PPI Lead. Sonia has worked as a Research Midwife on a large international clinical trial and also led and facilitated several community paediatric research studies for Solent NHS Trust.
Sonia's current role as PPI Officer facilitates and supports students and researchers with PPI in their projects and oversees the support of public contributors.
