Primary Care Research Centre
The Primary Care Research Centre undertakes world leading primary care research, helping to inform and improve evidence based health care. Since 2008 the Primary Care Research Centre (research led by Professor Paul Little) has been a member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR). Our Centre has attracted a wide range of funding, notably from NIHR (Programme Grants, Health Services Research, EME, Public Health Research, RfPB, Health Technology Assessment) as well as other research bodies e.g. MRC, Arthritis Research Council and Macmillan Trust.
Population Sciences
Researchers in Population Sciences are working on a number of multi-disciplinary projects with a range of funding from NIHR (Health Technology Assessment, HS+DR, Public Health Research, ARC Wessex) and from charities (British Heart Foundation, British Renal Society, Kidney Research UK) and work closely with other Faculties and Schools right across the University of Southampton.
Medical Education
Medical Education staff undertake research activities that range from education research projects to research in the fields of clinical ethics and law, sociology, medical education including widening participation and pedagogic methods. Much of this research is collaborative and inter-disciplinary, involving colleagues from other faculties and other universities. The Medical Education Innovation Network (MEIN) aims to share best practices in education to improve students' learning experiences by supporting new educational strategies, disseminating cutting-edge educational research and promoting innovative projects.
Our contributions to education are:
Leading the development and delivery of many areas of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programmes. Supervision and examining of postgraduate students and Year 3 medical students’ projects. Co-supervision of postgraduate students including Health Sciences, Psychology, Geography and Mathematics. We are also involved in interviewing, lecturing, running seminars, being Personal Academic Tutors and OSCEs. - The Primary Care Research Centre contributes to a broad range including: BM5 Year 1 SSU module (Health Improvement); BM5 Year 2 Research Methods (RMH) module - critical appraisal and marking; Year 4 SSM on Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Global Health SSM; BM4 teaching; BM4&5 Health Psychology and Long term conditions. BM5 Year 3 Research Projects. BM4&5 Final year critical appraisal teaching. Qualitative Methods in Health Public Health MSc module.
- Public Health and Medical Statistics run a Masters in Public Health as part of our cross Faculty University Strategic Research Group in Population Health and lead on the Global Health pathway. Lead the Research methods modules for and teach on other postgraduate programmes for MSc in Allergy, MSc Diabetes Best Practice, MSc Genomics Medicine, MSc in Medical Statistics, MSc Global Health in the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Postgraduate research programme in the Faculty of Medicine. We also supervise MSc dissertations.
- Medical Education are responsible for leading the development and delivery of most areas of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) curriculum. BM4, BM5, BM6 and BM(EU). These include a number of specialised fields: Clinical Ethics & Law, Communication, Digital Learning, Medical Humanities, Faculty Development and Professionalism.
