Professor Anneke Lucassen, Professor of Clinical Genetics, presents: 'From mutation to relation: Genomics in the real world.'
Over the past two decades there have been enormous developments in research into genes and genomes (a person's entire genetic code). In order for these developments to be successfully incorporated into clinical practice, and accepted by society, the ethical, legal and social issues need to be explored and related to these advances in an integrated way. The discovery of an inherited condition, or an inherited tendency in one person, may reveal information about risk of disease in their relatives, which in turn may raise tensions about issues such as consent and confidentiality. A family based approach is therefore often necessary.
Professor Lucassen
will discuss the interdisciplinary research programme she has developed in Southampton which proactively explores how best to transfer advances in the laboratory into clinical practice.
The lecture takes place on Tuesday 9 November 2010 at 5pm, with refreshments served from 4.30pm.
All welcome. No need to book a place.
Come along to Lecture Theatre 2, Level B, South Academic Block, Southampton General Hospital, SO16 6YD.
