Faculty supports decision for children’s heart surgery to remain at Southampton General Hospital

Published: 5 July 2012

Professor Mark Hanson, Director of Institute of Developmental Sciences and British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University’s Faculty of Medicine, along with colleagues, have praised the decision to keep children’s heart surgery at Southampton General Hospital.

Professor Hanson says: “On 4th July 2012, The Safe and Sustainable Review of Paediatric Cardiac Services concluded the process of designation of Specialist Centres in England. Southampton was confirmed as one of seven national centres in recognition of the outstanding quality of care and outcomes delivered in this renowned unit. The implications for care of babies born with heart problems, and also for research into their prevention and treatment, are very substantial.

"The Faculty of Medicine has a close partnership with the Children's Cardiac Unit and we are very pleased with the outcome of this review. The University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust have resolved to achieve excellence in translating research findings into improved clinical care. The review’s endorsement of our future vision for the Unit will enhance our collaborative programmes and our determination to make a difference to children and their families through the delivery of the highest level of care.”
