Sir John Tooke is the guest speaker at the Annual Wade Lecture which takes place on Tuesday 13 November 2012. Read the synopsis below for 'Harnessing Academia for National Health and Wealth'.

Medicine has a remarkable history of achievement. However, if it is to continue this trajectory, the barriers to innovation must be acknowledged and addressed. Innovation cannot be commanded, but requires a cultural shift to encourage academia, the NHS and industry to work together; the establishment of Academic Health Science Networks are an important step forwards in this regard.

Academia has the power to push boundaries. Our future success is dependent on our working in a more collaborative way, and on tomorrow’s doctors recognising the new and exciting responsibilities that this reveals.
