A new MSc in Public Health started this year. It is the first cross-faculty programme in the University that includes Medicine, Social and Human Sciences, Law and Health Sciences.

The programme has a pathway in Nutrition that is accredited by the Association for Nutrition, and there are plans to add other pathways such as global health. Besides university academic staff, Directors of Public Health and staff at Public Health England will be teaching. Twenty five students have enrolled on the programme; 10 on the nutrition pathway. Seven students are being supported by the NHS or Wessex Deanery showing we are meeting a local need. While most students are from UK, we also have students from Ghana, Nigeria, Spain and Germany. Southampton Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam says: “I’m very excited by the introduction of a new multi-disciplinary postgraduate programme in public health. As a specialist in public health myself, I recognise the importance of broadly-based education and training that provides both a solid foundation in the science of public health, and great preparation for public health practice. At Southampton we expect to provide both, offering students flexibility and choices in their studies".
