News about Enterprise and Internationalisation by Professor Richard Oreffo
The Faculty of Medicine will be at the world's largest biotechnology trade show in April leading a University-wide delegation. The Health and Pharma University Industry Sector Team (UIST) will be exhibiting at BIO in Chicago, explaining research strengths, highlights and activities from across the Academic Units in Medicine to 20,000 people from around the world who will be looking for leads and research collaborations and deals.
Our four delegates Dr Roxana Carare from Clinical and Experimental Sciences, Dr Karl Staples from Cancer Sciences, Dr Sally Nicholas and Karl Simpson (both from UIST/Research and Innovation Services) will be manning a stand and taking part in the organised partnering sessions, where we shall be promoting our capabilities. We will showcase key technologies and capabilities from Medicine to potential partners world-wide.

As part of driving the international agenda, a group from the Faculty is visiting South East Asia in April, specifically to universities in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong to promote postgraduate recruitment, foster our links with alumni and develop our research links. It will be led by the Dean, Professor Iain Cameron, and include Dr Chris Stephens, Professor John Holloway, Dr Sylvia Pender and Professor Oreffo.
Earlier this Spring Professor David Wilson attended a number of Graduate Trade Fairs in Brazil and Colombia. The objective to encourage more applicants for postgraduate study across our PhD and especially for our integrated PhD programmes. Professor Wilson also held meetings to develop research interests for the Faculty of Medicine in Brazil and Columbia.
Closer to home, the first Health Pharma conference will be held on 21 June in Garden Court at Highfield. Bench to Clinic: Partnership with Health & Pharma will showcase the varied research strengths of the University, the translational nature of the research we conduct, explore ways in which academia and industry can work together. Speakers from leading companies, government and healthcare companies will join academics in discussing key issues at the Highfield campus.
A one day meeting in January with GSK's Discovery Partnership with Academia (DPAc) organised by UIST Health & Pharma with 10 PIs from Medicine and across the University was highly successful. A CASE studentship award and a number of active collaborations were established as a consequence
