Southampton asthma research praised

The University of Southampton and one of its most distinguished professors have been recognised for their on-going commitment to asthma research.
As part of its continuing effort to highlight expertise and excellence in healthcare, Expertscape.com has released a list of the world's top institutions and medical specialists in the research and treatment of asthma.
The exact cause of this condition is not fully understood, but there are hereditary and environmental factors that tend to increase the likelihood of this chronic disease. The World Health Organization estimates that 300 million people worldwide suffer from this disease, causing 250,000 deaths annually.
Professor Stephen Holgate, Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Southampton, was named top of Expertscape’s list for world experts in asthma while the University of Southampton was named at number five on the list for world institutions in asthma research.
Professor Holgate comments: “This is unexpected but a great accolade. Southampton has been the very best place to undertake research of a condition unique to humans. Right from the start when I came to Southampton in the mid 1970s, I was given every opportunity to pursue experimental medicine to the highest level. This, to some degree explains why respiratory medicine still remains strong in Southampton. Our focus on bench to bedside is a reality here with new treatments such as inhibitors of the allergic cascade and agents that enhance our innate immune response to viruses are great examples of the impact that this research has delivered. I am sure there is a lot more to come.”
