Following The Department of Health's review of regulations of cosmetic surgery, Southampton final year medical student Sohaib Rufai and supervisor, Dr Chris Davis, from Stanford University Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, CA, USA, conducted a national review of cosmetic surgery providers' compliance with Department of Health guidelines.

They investigated the practices of Britain's top fifty cosmetic surgery providers with an aim to safeguard patients and improve regulations. They found low compliance with national guidelines for aesthetic surgery.
Sohaib presented the findings at the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons’s (BAAPS) Annual Scientific meeting in September 2013. The findings have been published in The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sun, The London Evening Standard, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph and the Press Association, and by broadcasters ITV News, Daybreak, BBC Radio 1, BBC Newsbeat and BBC's You and Yours.

BAAPS also awarded Sohaib’s presentation the Hackett Memorial Prize first runner up for best oral presentation delivered by a trainee.
