Lauren Jevons, doctoral researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, has won the top award at this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) University Grand Final.

Lauren competed against doctoral researchers from the University’s seven other faculties, and impressed the judges to win first prize. Lauren will now go on to represent the University at the 3MT national semi-finals later in the year.

This annual competition, developed by the University of Queensland and now an international initiative, requires doctoral researchers to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes, accompanied by only one static slide.

Lauren competed with seven grand finalists (one from each Faculty) to explain her PhD research in just three minutes, using one PowerPoint slide and no additional props or electronic media. Lauren's PhD research harnesses a multidisciplinary tissue engineering strategy encompassing acoustofluidics to generate cartilage from human embryonic stem cells. Lauren is supervised by Dr Rahul Tare, Dr Franchesca Houghton, Professor Martyn Hill and Dr Peter Glynne-Jones, and the research is funded by the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS), Faculty of Medicine Doctoral Training Award and the Rosetrees Trust.

Commenting on her win, Lauren Jevons said: "It was a truly wonderful experience to be part of the 3MT Grand Final. The support for all speakers was fantastic, and all contestants gave excellent and insightful performances!"

The 3MT competition showcases the diversity and impact of the postgraduate researcher community here at the University, and I am proud to be representing the University at the next stage of the competition. I hope I can follow in the footsteps of last year’s 3MT national winner, Nazira Albargothy, also from the Faculty of Medicine.

Winning the People’s Choice vote, as well as Joint Runner Up prize from the Judging Panel, was Katie St John Glew, from the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences. Ivan Ling, from the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, was also named as Joint Runner up by the Judging Panel.

The 3MT prize money will be used by this year’s winners to support their research.

Congratulations to all who took part and we wish Lauren the best of luck in the next stage of the competition.
