Conference celebrates Southampton's research

Health and medicine researchers and academics came together this week at the second annual Southampton Medical and Health Research Conference.

More than 300 staff and students attended over the two-day event, which showcased Southampton’s health pioneering research with a series of talks and presentations from postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate research students and clinical academic trainees.

The first day was kicked off by John Holloway, Associate Dean for Research for Medicine, and Susan Latter, Professor of Nursing in Health Sciences, who welcomed attendees to the conference, gave examples of existing collaborations and spoke of the pioneering research taking place in Southampton.

Throughout the morning presentations took place showcasing work in cancer, interdisciplinary projects, human development, stem cells and regeneration and education, workforce and clinical ethics.

Sir Robert Lechler, of the Academy of Medical Sciences, gave the day’s keynote lecture, which focused on sustaining the UK’s eminence in biomedical and health research.

This was followed by another series of presentations representing the work taking place in Development Origins of Health and Disease, Qualitative Research in Healthcare. Professor Andrew Morris, of Health Data Research UK, gave this year’s Annual Wade Lecture, which followed the first day.

Dean of Medicine Professor Iain Cameron introduced the second day which included talks and presentations on cancer, ageing and dementia, infection, respiration and allergy, genomics and primary care.

A key goal of the conference was to give those at the earlier stages of their research career the opportunity to present their work at a conference, sometimes for the very first time, with the chance to win a prize. The poster sessions also provided valuable networking opportunities.

With a wonderful atmosphere, fantastic talks and exciting new research developments, it was a great way to celebrate Southampton's strength in medical and health research. Thank you to everyone who attended and we hope you enjoyed the event.
