Southampton medical students celebrate graduation day

The achievements of around 300 medical undergraduate and postgraduate students in medicine and biomedical sciences have been recognised and celebrated at Graduation 2019.

Students donned their caps and gowns and received their certificates in front of proud family and friends.

The Faculty of Medicine ceremonies took place on Monday 22 July at either the Nuffield Theatre and Turner Sims Concert Hall on the University’s Highfield Campus.

It was the first graduation ceremony for Professor Diana Eccles as the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

She said: “Graduation is a very special time of year and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the significant achievements and dedication of both our students and their teachers. I am extremely proud to be attending my first Graduation as Dean and would like to personally congratulate all of our new graduates and wish them every success for the future.”

Individual students also received special recognition for achievement.

This year the Donald Acheson First Prize for the highest ranked performance in undergraduate medicine was awarded to Jennifer Butler, who completed the BM4 course. Charlotte Harrison received the Donald Acheson Second Prize while Charlotte Bocking received the Donald Acheson Third Prize.

The Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Prizes, recognising excellence in overall contribution to the Bachelor of Medicine Programmes and the Faculty, was awarded to Laura Brophy and Ellen Williams, who both completed the BM5 course.

Laura said: “I’ve loved my time at Southampton and I am so proud to graduate today with my fellow classmates.”

Ellen added: “I’ve made some incredible friends here. The course has been great and I am looking forward to what’s next.”

Around 7,500 students graduated from the University of Southampton over the last week and a number of honorary degrees were presented to leading figures in the fields of oceanography, business, law and biological sciences.
