REF results announced today

The Faculty of Medicine’s outstanding research and impact has been recognised in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) results, announced today (12 May 2022).

In unit of assessment (UoA) 1 Clinical Medicine, 81% of the Faculty’s research was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ while the result for UoA2 Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care was even better, with 94% of our research judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, with the highest grade point average in this UoA.

Faculty colleagues also made a strong contribution to UoA4 Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience where 76% of the University’s research was assessed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The Faculty’s REF submission was the culmination of an seven-year assessment period, the endeavours of dozens of colleagues who prepared the submissions and, not least, the efforts of research staff and students over decades.

Professor Diana Baralle, Associate Dean of Research, said: “As a Faculty we can be incredibly proud of how our research was assessed, particularly of how the impact of our research was judged. Of the 16 case studies we submitted over UoAs 1,2 and 4, 69% were judged “world leading” and all others “internationally excellent”.

“Looking at research power, our research quality multiplied by quantity, we were ranked 12th in the country for clinical medicine, which is a fantastic result. We should all be very proud of our research community, not just because of our REF performance, but because of the contribution we are making to improving the health of the population in the 21st century.”
