The achievements of more than 600 medical students are being recognised at a special celebration event this week.

Students who have finished their undergraduate medical degree this year will be joined by former medical students who completed their studies in 2021 and 2022.

For the past two years, the University took the difficult decision to postpone graduation ceremonies due to the pandemic. But this year, with graduations back in full swing, students who have previously completed their degree have been invited back to be part of the celebrations.

The University is holding a super graduation event at St Mary’s Stadium in the city, where more than 11,000 eligible students will receive their undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral awards, making this the largest graduation event in the University’s history.

Professor Diana Eccles, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, said: “Graduation is a very special time of year and provides a great opportunity to celebrate the significant achievements and dedication of both our students and their teachers.

“But the pandemic meant we were unable to celebrate with our students in person. The challenges of COVID-19 were difficult for us all, especially our students, many of whom completed their studies early so they could join clinical teams across the NHS and be part of our response, so it is only right that they get the ceremony and celebration they richly deserve.

“We are all very excited to be attending graduation again this week - the clinking of glasses and talk of the future, is wonderful to be a part of, and we are looking forward to welcoming our graduates from this year and the past two cohorts, along with their families, to this very exciting event.”

Individual students finishing this year, have also received special recognition for achievement.

This year the Donald Acheson First Prize for the highest ranked performance in undergraduate medicine was awarded to:

First: Rebecca Leslie (BM5)
Second: Sophie Knipe (BM5)
Third: Lydia Billington (BM4)

The Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Prizes, recognising excellence in overall contribution to the Bachelor of Medicine Programmes and the Faculty, was awarded to:

Melissa Anane (BM6)
Bethany Connell (BM4)
Leah Crabtree (BM4)
Augustine Fosu (BM6)
Vladislav Skripnik (BMEU)
