“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
― Albert Camus
With the start of the academic year come new challenges and opportunities. Continuing on John Holloway’s theme of REF, the impact of research is likely to be a major theme of REF 2020, as Theresa May’s troops endeavour to measure the “bang” that their research funding “bucks” have made. It is worth considering the impact of your work even at this early stage in the REF cycle and we will soon be scoping potential impact case stories for the next REF as we aim to make the most of potential opportunities. At this stage there are plenty of chances to enhance the impact of research, before the REF clock times out. To this end The University has been approached by Sanofi which is looking to provide selected institutions in the UK with access to a rich and unique compound collection along with its drug discovery expertise. If you have something up your sleeve that you think would be a druggable target, and wish to explore partnering opportunities, then please contact Brigitte Lavoie (balavoie@soton.ac.uk) for more details. Brigitte can also be contacted if you wish to find industrial partners to facilitate research or help to make your work impactful.
The Chilworth Science Park offers opportunities to University Academics to take the first step of their Enterprise Journey through the Biomedical Catalyst scheme. Peter Birkett and David Bream from the Science Park will be visiting the Faculty in October, as will Stuart Plant from the IP group which has a track record in investing in university-based technologies. James Hamilton (J.C.Hamilton@soton.ac.uk) can help with these and other enquiries related to intellectual property.
The Higher Education and Business Community Interaction survey (HEBCIS) ranks The University of Southampton as one of the leaders in consultancy. Within the Faculty this can be undertaken through a private or University model. However whichever model you wish to use, it is mandatory that these are registered with the Faculty. The staff of the Faculty of Medicine have been patchy in the registering of these and it is important for ranking and governance reasons that this tightens up. Over the next month or so, please endeavour to register all your current consultancies with the FoM office. Thanks.
